WHAT TO DO IN AN EARTHQUAKE: FEMA FACT SHEET

Due to the earthquake
that occurred today -
August 23, 2011
on the east coast.

Here's some important
safety tips
for all
the east coasters
who
DO NOT
typically experience earthquakes
brought to you
first by
YouTube west coast videoclip
and
The FEMA Factsheet
by
New York Committee
for Occupational Safety and Health
(NYCOSH)

FEMA FACTSHEET:

What to Do During an Earthquake:

- Be aware some earthquakes are actually foreshocks
and
a larger earthquake might occur.

- Minimize your movements to a few steps to a nearby safe place
and
- IF you are indoors, stay there until the shaking has stopped
and
you are sure exiting is safe.

If indoors:

- DROP to the ground; take COVER by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and HOLD ON until the shaking stops.

- If there isn't a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building.

- Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall,

- Stay in bed if you are there when the earthquake strikes. Hold on and protect your head

- Use a doorway for shelter only if it is in close proximity to you and if you know it is a strongly
- Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside.

- Research has shown that most injuries occur when people inside buildings attempt to move to a different location inside the building or try to leave.
- Be aware that the electricity may go out or the sprinkler systems or fire alarms may turn on.
- DO NOT use the elevators.

If outdoors:

- Stay there.

- Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires.
- Once in the open, stay there until the shaking stops.

- The greatest danger exists directly outside buildings, at exits and alongside exterior walls.

- Many of the 120 fatalities from the 1933 Long Beach earthquake occurred when people ran outside of buildings only to be killed by falling debris from collapsing walls.

- Ground movement during an earthquake is seldom the direct cause of death or injury.

- Most earthquake-related casualties result from collapsing walls, flying glass, and falling objects.

If in a moving vehicle:

- Avoid roads, bridges, or ramps that might have been damaged by the earthquake.

If trapped under debris:

- Do not move about or kick up dust.

- Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing.

- Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you. Use a whistle if one is available. Shout only as a last resort. Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust.

PEACE!

REMEMBER 9/11: 10 YEARS HAS PASSED. TURN TRAGEDY INTO LOVE! TEACH OUR CHILDREN TOLERANCE.

Do you remember
this day?
Do you remember what
YOU
were doing that day?

What do YOU
have to
take
from this?

REMEMBER
9/11!
It has a purpose.

That good
can come
from bad.

Teach our children.
Raise awareness
on
9/11/11.
10 years ago something really bad happened.

Bringing 9/11 Into the Classroom—10 Years Later

Teach our children tolerance.

Tolerance for others differences.
It's a key preventive
to
future hate crimes
or
acts of terrorism as
awful as 9/11!

9/11 was an example of
hate and indifference.
No one wins
by
hating!

(NO tolerance for terrorism is correct!)

Teach our children
9/11
was an
awful act of hatred
and
a
lack of tolerance -
lack of love,
lack of understanding,
and lack of respect
for others
differences.

Teach our children now
to
respect others differences
and learn that from
9/11
no one wins hating
Prevent hate crimes
through respect and love
for one another's differences.

PEACE
&
LOVE!
That's what really matters.

IS VITAMIN WATER HEALTHY?

Vitamin water -
So refreshing.
It has to be healthy.
Right?
I mean the name says it all,
VITAMIN WATER!

It wouldn't be named
Vitamin water
otherwise -

OR maybe not?
It's vitamin water -
Really?
Can it really be called
Vitamin water?

Is this name
misleading the public?

Translation:
VITAMIN WATER = SUGAR WATER
made by a health company.
NO!
Made by the large company
that sells
SUGAR
beverages.

This is an
example on
why reading
the label carefully
or
going
one step further
to
investigate the ingredients
makes a difference.

Consumers
must dig deep to understand
what's
in the beverages
or
foods
we buy and then
put in
our mouths.

Again if it's just plane ole'
sugar water
why is it that this
very large and well known
soda manufacturer
can
get away with calling it
Vitamin water?
Instead of what it really is -
SUGAR WATER!
I guess, if Edgar likes it -
it has to be
good for you?
The only difference is
Edgar
calls it like he sees it.

FDA - Overmilking authority: Is America going Socialist with food?

GO CUSE! "COURTS 4 KIDS" IS A WINNER ON GIVING BACK

GO CUSE!
GIVING BACK - IT'S A WIN-WIN SITUATION
(Left to right back) Joanie Mahoney, Onondaga County Executive, John Wallace, former Syracuse University basketball player, (front) Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner, (back) Derrick Coleman, former SU basketball player, and Jim Boeheim, SU basketball coach, attend the ribbon cutting for the newest Courts 4 Kids basketball court at Skiddy Park, 300 Tioga St., Tully, Otisco and Oswego Streets. Morganne M. Atutis/The Post-Standard

MAKING A DIFFERENCE - One court at a time!

PUTTING KIDS FIRST in SYRACUSE

Post Standard article
The former Syracuse University basketball star
Derrick Coleman
joined Syracuse
 coach Jim Boeheim
and
another former Orange player,
John Wallace,
for the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the
third
Courts 4 Kids
project in Syracuse.

As he watched the kids play,
Coleman said
he couldn’t help but think back
to his own childhood days in Detroit.
“Kids need a safe haven to play,’’ Coleman said.
“Renovating the park, building the courts
 and
the playground,
it’s going to mean so much to the children in this area.’’

Skiddy Park followed Courts 4 Kids projects at Wilson Park
and Schiller Park in the city of Syracuse.

Boeheim
and
former Orange star Carmelo Anthony
created the Courts 4 Kids program.
“I’d like to keep doing these projects
until
every park in the city is re-done,’’ Boeheim said.

The renovation effort at Skiddy Park
included three new basketball courts, soccer goals,
and team benches.

It also consisted of conservation efforts.
Two of the new basketball courts
use a porous pavement system
to prevent storm water from entering the sewer system,
which will prevent pollution from entering Harbor Brook and Onondaga Lake.

A fund-raising effort done
outside of the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation
and the
Carmelo Anthony Foundation
resulted in the construction
of a new playground for the park.
“I think it’s an important cause,’’ said Boeheim,
“and it’s one we hope to continue.’’

It's great for the kids when
they have POSITIVE support of the community
to promote a healthy self.
In the background is Blodgett Middle School
where I went to school as
a child.
This park was merely grass when I went to school there with
NO playground.
